Learn Milky Way Photography in 5 Minutes!
In this video I teach a very basic tutorial on how to photograph the milky way. I talk about the type of gear needed, how to plan milky way photography, where to find the milky way, and camera settings to photograph the milky way.
Check out my blog post on Milky Way Photography:
Here is the formula for shutter speed:
Full Frame Cameras:
500/focal length
Ex: 15mm – 500/15= 30 second shutter speed
Crop Sensor Formula:
500/1.5 x focal length
EX: 11mm x 1.5= 17mm
500/17=29.4 or 30 seconds

Also, for anyone with a Canon crop sensor (APS-C) it's a 1.6X crop factor. And for anyone with an android device, I recommend an app called Sun Surveyor. Very similar to Photo Pills, but for android.
Please give me aap name????
I was starting to think every sweet shot of the milky way was photoshopped in, 9 times out of 10 the shots are far too good to be true but this definitely changes my views on it! I'm absolutely useless with astrophotography so I'll have to watch about 50 more videos before it starts to sink in haha thanks for the help man!
So cool man!! Thanks!
if using a aps-c camera with a EF-S lens you DONT need to do the x1.6. you only do it if you have lenses for full frame cams on a cropped cam
Amaizing, glad I watched your video, inspiring.
30" shutter speed will create a slight star trail. anything at or above 25"
Going next month on a camping trip and I want to do this. I'll be using my Canon Rebel t7i with a rented (BorrowLenses.com) Sigma 24mm 1.4 ART Lens. So with your formula it would be 24×1.6 (Cannon APS-C)=38.4. 500/38.4= 13.02. So my Shutter speed is 13 seconds. Set Aperture at 1.4 (Wide Open) and focus. Ok, got it! Thanks!
Wondering why the 500 rule doesn’t work with high megapixel cameras? I have a Sony a7rii
Really Cool 👍🐺
great video cholo!
Go Jays!
Cool
Dude, you rock! Thank you.
a Bridge camera can do this? like lumix fz300
What lens are you using on that Canon, great vid.
You say to focus during the day and secure this focus with gaffers. Yet you later instruct tofocus on the brightest star. How if the gaffers in holding the focus you previously set?? Doesn't make sense.

magnificent video, thanks for the info… to be honest i dont think i can do that with my PowerShot SX540 HS
but its very interesting to see
The Milky Way upon the heavens
Is twinkling just for you
And Mr. Moon he came by
To say goodnight to you
I'll sing for you I'll sing for mother
We're praying for the world
And for the people everywhere
Gonna show them all we care
That was amazing
Does the Photopills-app also work in Europe? Or is there a cheaper/costless alternative?
Wow! One of the best photography videos I have viewed. Detailed, concise, to the point, and under 10 min. Great Job!
