People with white canes tap it left and right. They can tell by the sound if something is in the way. They don't push it in front of them like here. I saw a video a while back of a child being taught to use a cane. Tap left and right.
Pip had a lousy trainer.
You have to give commands. Forward, left, right. Blind generally know if they know the way the right commands. The dog just doesn't just start. The dog stops at curbs, trained not to go until safe, guides around obstacles, know about stairs, are trained not to be distracted and people must never interfere with his job!
We had a blind piano tuner when was little. Mom used to do Braille but until that day never met a blind person. I remember his dog was a big German Shepherd. Well since I was so small every dog looked huge to me. Smokey was his name and he was the first guide dog I'd seen. He would lay down under the piano as the man worked. Behind him were our book shelves and went to get an encyclopedia and the next thing I remember was Smokey standing in my path and barking. I told the man I was trying to get a book. Smokey was very protective. He was told to lie down so I could get the book and he did. I asked if I could pet Smokey. Nope. He's working. I said OK laid down further away and looked in the encyclopedia like I always did. I don't remember if Smokey had on his harness while under the piano or him leaving or his coming in. I was pretty impressed. The piano tuner was very nice. I was maybe about five or six at the time, never saw a blind person and asked him questions but had to ask if I could come closer so I wasn't barked at. He said sure. Smokey seemed to realize I wasn't a threat. Been fascinated by guide dogs since.

She's a klutz! Trainers of guide dogs don't need blindfolds.
