Yay a photographer who understands and can explain hyperfocal distance! Many supposed photographers can't. What's the point of using a really small aperture with deep depth of field if your subjects you want in focus are really far away pretty much at infinity such as in most landscape shots and getting a soft image due to diffraction around the small aperture? Just use a larger aperture as you say in your next video. Maybe you remember when lenses used to have distance scales and aperture markings on their barrels so you could just switch the lens to manual adjust the lens to suit what you wanted to be in focus in your shot at what ever distance depending on the aperture you have chosen so simple. But most modern DSLRs don't have lenses with distance scales and aperture markings on any more. I have met so many photographers who cannot grasp this even supposedly more experienced photographers. Once you do it is an epiphany moment in photography and you can do so much more being really creative and of course getting what you want in focus to be pin sharp of course using all your other tips as well. Focus 1/3 in always works well. Great tutorial.

  4. Hitchy says

Hi Attilio, love your tips as usual. Do you ever use infinerty focus…do you recommend it or do your steer away from it?

  5. Carlos Molina says

Another great video, thanks a lot

  7. Trevor Lloyd says

Great to see you out of the office Attilio my friend, we're going out on a wee camera club field trip tonight just to keep the members meeting up during the closed season. This is with my other club Skelmorlie CC (Not Inverclyde CC the one you did the Intro for me), thanks again for some tips, bow to put them into practice

I don't know why but there is so much "magic" or "positive energy" in your videos in which you are outside in the nature. Hard to explain …
It's beautiful – and then you play the music and it's even more beautiful.

But strangely this is only in your videos – don't feel the same in other photographers videos when they are somewhere filming in nature.
Thank you for the helpful information by the way. Like your Italian accent.
    Cheers from Austria!

Thank you again Artilio just off to add your hashtag on Instagram – one day I will get an ok Landscape Shot that is worthy enough to show – until then I will keep plugging away !

Hi Attilio. Not only do I really get alot from your videos, I also like your choice of background music lol.

  12. Giuseppe Alaimo says

Hi Attilio. Great video. You always explain very important concepts in few words, easy to understand. Just one question … looking at your pictures in this video, are you using a polarizer? In case, when do you suggest it? It will be great if you can cover also this topic in future. Grazie mille, Giuseppe

  13. Graham Lewis says

thanks attilio great video learned alot about focus and photo pills!

  14. Thomas Duffy says

Great Stuff Attilio. I learned some new techniques today from you!

  15. Snowwalker says

Thank you Attillio for another great tip. I downloaded the app but when I choose a 15mm lens at f/8 in the app does it mean it's a full frame 15mm? My camera is an APSC therefore 15mm is actually around 24mm equivalent. Should I use a 24mm focal distance instead in the app?

  16. Michelle R says

I think we need another video on this subject with you doing more demonstration. I am still confused…

  17. James Lane says

Hi, I noticed you use a Rolleicord. I use 6×7 mostly as my landscape medium. Does this focus at 1/3 technique help with the larger MF formats? I struggle sometimes with getting focus throughout a scene for 6×7

  18. Walt Woolf says

Thank you. Looking forward to applying these techniques and watching your next video,

  19. MarcBaillargeon says

Attilio, I also have the f-stop Ajna. Would be very curious to have a comparison! Please keep up with the great work. Grazie!

This video is more attractive because it's on location. Nice explanation of the techniques Waiting for the next one.

  25. Simone Chiaretta says

Great video and great location. I think I’ve been there (or somewhere near) in my road trip to west USA. But how do you tell the camera to focus at precisely 1,06m? Is it camera specific? Or just by rotating the focus ring?

  26. Stavros Georgiou says

  27. Ashish Mestry says

But how do you calculate that focus point distance physically? How do you know that object which is to be focused is at the calculated distance?

  28. Fernando Martinez Napoles says

Finally!, someone who knows how to explain complex stuff for beginners in an easy way. Thank you.

  29. Yannick B. says

Hi Attilio, I'd love trying focus stacking and pano stitching but i only have the Photo app on my iMac. I can't afford Adobe's subscription fees for LR or Photoshop, do you know any good alternatives? I've heard Nikon's website might have something, not found the right download yet. Cheers, Yannick.

  30. Murat Batmaz says

Always great videos from you, Attilio. Thanks!

  31. david edge says

Great. I feel happy that you kept my request and made a vlog outside. Your information were really helpful but could you please simply a bit with a bit more time spent on it with more detail? I will be very beneficial. Thank you once again.

  36. RaySweeting says

    Additionally using these in combination

  37. RaySweeting says

Hi would you kindly cover long exposure with ND filters vs in camera multiple exposure (I have a D850 which can do 10 shots combined in to one image) vs multiple shots combined in software. Your thoughts on the pros and cons would be appreciated. 👍

  38. Michelle Liu says

Great job in simplifying a someways complicated subject.

  39. paulandpedro says

Nice video. I like your videos better when they bring a more of an informal vlog feel, like when you talked about coming to Tahoe.

  40. Larry Lancaster says

The 1/3 technique was not explained well at all. You didn't tell us where you focused and why.

  41. Michael Mai says
