About this episode:
If you’re a stock photographer or stock filmmaker, or even if you’re just getting started, I’m sure it already crossed your mind.
Today we’re going to compare many aspects of selling stock photography and selling stock footage. Although you can do both using the same agencies and even the same equipment, there are significant differences you’d like to be aware. You’ll find many differences in the workflow, earnings, speed & number of sales, and different tools for both sides.
My goal with this video is to show photographers & filmmakers how the other side of the coin works and the way to follow if you plan to increase your income doing it (i.e., agencies, workflow and best tools). I also want to help beginners with useful data so you can take your own decision on which path to follow.
To ensure this analysis is as real as possible; I invited a special guest to participate in today’s episode. I got surprised by his honesty and transparency. I’m honored to introduce photographer & blogger Alex Rotenberg.
Alex is famous for writing “The Brutally Honest Guide to Microstock Photography.” This eBook is a must-read for every photographer in the Stock Photography world.
We had an excellent conversation, and I believe I did a good job selecting the best parts of it. Alex will be talking from the photography side, while I’ll be representing the footage side.
WHAT SHOULD WE DISCUSS NEXT?
Evolution of earnings? Commercial vs. Editorial? Best Sellers Earnings? Workflow? This is totally up to you guys! Leave a comment and we’ll definitely be back in the future!
Alex and I will record the Commercial vs. Editorial live in Dec 24th. We will be answering the most voted questions until there.

You're 100% Brazilian right? haha I could tell by your accent and then he said "hi Guilherme" and I just knew it! I'm Brazilian too so… takes one to know one (;
Love all the info you share. Thank you very much!!
Oi, tudo bem? Eu sou do Paranaguá! But I live in Scotland 🙂 where do you get your music for your videos?
This was very helpful. I'm just getting into stock footage. But this made me aware of how much stock photography I have sitting on hard drives waiting to be monitized. 🙂
just got my 30 first images on shutterstock… thinking the color of the lambo i'll get
Is everyone buying the same into as Peter? Here is an idea– Do something different.
congratulations on your baby girl!
You do not talk about Gettyimages, what do you think about the stock footage?
Do you guys upload RAW files or JPEG/mp4?
Wonderfully comprehensive! Well done, and thank you to both of you!
Thank you! I am just now realizing I can take the photos that I post that people seem to like and actually sell them online, but don’t know where to begin, so I appreciate videos like this
Great video! Congratulations on the birth of your baby girl! She's beautiful.
Hey, Thank you for valuable information you shared with us. Appreciate 🙏
good advice but i would love to have advice from people who are really making money in this industry. Your 2017 earning is realy not impressive.. 1.690 a year ? is it a joke ?
Great insights guys! And yeah this is a marathon! I've got some image sales on shutterstock, and now I'm improving my footage skills focusing in the future! Keep up great work!
Congrats for the baby! Great video!
If I use BB to upload videos, do I have to use at the same time a shutterstock to upload photos?
I have a question. What are the implications of using video footage to find stills that can be used for photography? I'm not a very technical person, when it comes to photography. So, I don't really know much about shutter speed etc. But some of the best images I have (I haven't tried to sell anything yet BTW) are from videos. I have found that you can get amazing "photos" from videos. However .. this doesn't seem to be a common practice. Is there a reason why this is not a good idea? It seems to me, superficially, at least, that you can shoot a nice piece of video footage, then scan through and hunt for good stills to submit as photos. Is this a bad idea? And if so .. why?
I love the videos you have posted so far. You are addressing exactly the questions I have.
Thank you.
how much you earn for a month ?
great stuff guys!
Found this interesting, it was a good idea doing an interview with another stock website user.
Do old video footage still sell? Let's say 1 year old, 2 years old, 3 years old footage? Do footage sell less often over time? Hope you reply thanks.
You’re tooooo low! Can hardly hear you.
Motivated to watch you video I am a video editor and I have lots of stock footages and pics in my pc. Just think about to sale on-line.
This was a well done video. great job explaining and comparing the differences. On point, clear and simple. Learned a few things. Thanks for sharing.
música pesada e irritante no BG do início, se o assunto realmente não me interessasse eu teria saído. com dificuldade dá pra ouvir você.
tell us about faces,I have heard that we cant directly sell footage with faces in it. And it can be sold only to media and other big companies. I am going to record footage of a place over 1 month time span and it will have around 250 million people visiting in around 1 month. So what do I do? shoot with their faces? or shoot what exactly?
heres a question, im a motion graphics artist and have a decent size collection of motion graphics ranging from countdowns to video loops and everything in between. Is there a market for that in stock footage?
How do you earn money to buy sony a7r, sony a7s, panasonic gh if you barely earn money selling stock photos?
Super video. I’ve learned a lot. 👍
A very informative video.
Great video. Really enjoyed (what felt like) being part of that chat! Very engaging. You've definitely got a new subscriber here!
Can you upload the pictures you have taken for your instagram , or the videos you use in the vlogs or travel filmmaking ? Does it bother the buyer ?
One more thing
Can you upload a single picture/video on multiple stock platforms ?
Very good knowledge sharing. I happen to just start to do stock footage as people getting better internet connections and like to see video on their social media.
I really like your honesty . Im tired of all the you tubers now trying to push black box claiming you;ll make $2000 a month ( they push it as they also get a % if you sign up to black box through their site. Seems like this whole industry is already saturated! 🙁
Enjoying your videos. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter!
To be fully aware of. I appreciate how important this is.Thank you
Big thanks to both of you for that honest and eye opening talk.
Can we post the images and videos both in stock sites and in our social media accounts
Great interview !! Always a surprise, I really liked it!
Where can I see your portfolio at shutterstock?
Big Hug from Luanda – Angola
