Veiwing Loupe, there good for live view when the sun shines on the rear screen and washes out your view.
Brilliant stuff gentlemen. It’s perfect for listening to while doing anything, especially while stuck in bed. Much appreciated thank you 🙏
Hey guys I know we are one week on from this podcast but I thought of a good topic for the next one and its important as it will affect us all in the future. Adobe are running out a replacement subscription plan for the current $9 photography plan in some parts of the USA and it will double the cost to around $20 per month! The say nothing is set in stone but you know how these things start. The question you have to ask is as long time users of adobe Lightroom and photoshop how would you react if that if it was brought into the UK and our subs went up to over £20 per month!
For me personally I would walk away! Being a fuji user I bought Capture One Pro last month when it was half price and over the next few months I was going to prepare to migrate over to C1. I only use photoshop 5% cloning, masking, so I will look elsewhere for that. C1 is not and is not meant to be a replacement for photoshop but it will suit most of my needs. Its just a bloody pest having to learn new stuff at my age (65) but needs must.
How do you three feel? Are you all heavily invested in adobe? Just a thought.
A magnifying glass and a hat lol, I instantly thought of Sherlock Holmes.
A great podcast guys, love the good humored ribbing, it's good to laugh at ourselves sometimes.
Brilliant you guys are so quick and funny 😊 thanks fellas.
Gary nailed it. 1min in.
Bracketing Bracketting Brackettting…Only way to go ;0)
Great podcast guys, Have to go back to Youtube to comment. I bracket, too clumsy, would end up braking thous expensive pieces of glass.
Entertaining vlog again lads. I fully agree with Paul Creosote Johnson go out and enjoy your photography anytime of the day. I can't understand people who hike up a mountain just to take one shot. That's like having your Friday night chippy tea and only eating the fish. Great work, keep shoot.
Great episode. A topic for another episode, do you prefer shooting alone or with others, does it effect the way you go about shooting? Do you find it easier to be creative when alone or does having other photographers with you help inspire you in different ways?
Great show guys. The "viewer/magnifier" does have one other benefit other than framing and determining pinpoint sharpness. It eliminating stray light hitting the back of your screen when the light source is behind you. Neanderthals cuff their LCD to see their image but sophisticated lensmen like Paul and my good self understand the endless virtues of such a device. Wink…Greg….OH Gary …https://www.camerapro.com.au/lee-filters-wideangled-hood-with-2-filter-slots-large-format-camera.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwza_mBRBTEiwASDWVvgfrGxw1yC12ZFfTasE_PPk2FmwxgCmff4K2Snjw33aff4LnJJC5ERoCaEQQAvD_BwE
Nice one guys, good to hear photographers chatting without the technical jargon and agreeing to disagree.
👍 great content and debate this episode.
Great advice and banter as usual guys.
Question. Can an jeg image be taken using the setting available within the camera that would be as good as one taken in raw then post processed ?
Question – What and how much to eat before setting out on a day's shoot.
Really enjoyed this episode so keep it up guy's.
34:45 I created a photobook for 2018 (my first year back shooting) of some shots and my goal is to do that every years. It's just a cheap drugstore inkjet-ish style prints (Walgreens is the store I used) but they are presented as a book that sits on my coffee table. Very nice way to review images that otherwise I'd never look at on my computer.
The 'thing you put on the back of the screen' is called a Loupe. Great things. And I could be wrong here but I believe the American guy Paul refers to is called Tom Mackie who is a fantastic photographer with a Youtube channel called 'Landscape Photography IQ'
Brilliant, yet again. Thanks guys.
I love podcasts whilst on the bus and walking round town, keep it up lads. With regards to have a lens hood for filter, saw something similar issue on a youtube and whilst out walking came across the solution. A dog collar/cone , they come in differentsizes and easy to fit. Let you guys try this out. Keep it up lads
So that clicklock head ? … 🙂
Top show again guys another 1 i enjoyed very much. Some good tips but i think youtube is a great tool.
Loved every minute – thank you guys, very entertaining and thought provoking too.
For your next discussion, how about a conversation about printing your photos? Also, having been a wedding caterer I know how crazy weddings can be. Perhaps Gary would talk about some of his experiences as a wedding photographer.
I like the suggestion about "just go for a walk" and don't worry about getting a shot. I spent a few years carrying my camera with me every time I went out and spent my time "looking for a shot". It got to a point where I felt pressured to come away with something. I put my camera in the bedroom closet two months ago and, aside from two images I needed for a blog piece, haven't taken a single image – including my phone – since then and it feels good to have that off my shoulders. I needed a break to re-energize. I do find that I am more free to look around and have actually found a number of new compositions in areas that I have almost shot to death. I will be getting the camera out in the next week or two (maybe three) and start shooting again but think periodic breaks may become the norm. Great podcast, guys! Keep up the good work!
Good points Gents…re the somewhat predictable "perfect" vlogs we regularly see, I shot lots of footage for YT when in Scotland in March but was nearly going to bin it when I got home as the weather was properly bleak but then realised it would make 2 decent "this is what Scotland can be like so be prepared but enjoy it" videos (one Glencoe and other about a day in Torridon) … Way better for newcomers thinking of venturing to wilder places to know the downsides and prepare accordingly and then they can ENJOY the adventure (as you all agreed) .. HOWEVER I suspect viewers are still drawn to the "perfect conditions/results" videos like moths to flames !! ps…did Gary get all his online shopping done between 07:00 and 12:00 ??…I'm guessing, wearing that shirt, he's an Ocado man !!
On the Internet, Ordnance Survey maps are viewing option on Bing Maps (Microsoft's version of Google Maps). Open https://www.bing.com and (while looking at somewhere in Great Britain) click in the viewing options in the top right corner and you can see the 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 maps for that area depending on how far you zoom in. Free.
Take a screenshot and print it if you need a hard copy.
Great blog again lads. So many useful items can be bought to assist with getting shots, my favourites are:
L-Bracket
£5 remote shutter cable from Amazon
New tripod head for old tripod, given it a lease of life
Photopills
Long exposure calculator app (was free too)
Step up rings
Samyang 12mm f2 that cost me less than £200
More than a few laughs in this one and it took me all the way round my health walk in the park. This podcast is now firmly on my weekly look 'forward to' list so please keep them coming.
There was someone I saw here on youtube who had a filter holder with a huge hood, IIRC they were a guest on someone's channel (possibly from Ted Forbes artist series). My impression was it was an older setup brought forward from when they used to shoot medium format film but don't quote me on that my CRS runs deep some days. I currently fall on the bracketing side of the ND grad debate simply for financial reasons.
Mr Gough is definitely old school! 😂
Great chat again guys. As a Street photographer in London it's much the same as what you described in landscape. It's so hard not to go straight for a traditional landmark like barbican or Southbank for street shots when the best shots often come from small moments that you can never plan for or imagine. I think the best tip is what you guys touched on is to say yes to every small shot that takes your fancy. I find each one opens up a new pathway to a creative idea which can only be a good thing. I imagine that is the same for landscapes too. Its so easy to get trapped in a prison of your own limited imagination. Life is always more creative
Your room is overexposed.
What a hoot!
I subscribe to each of you, but this . .this is just the funniest learning I've had. Thanks so much for getting together.
And- I'm soo curious about that magnifier now.Pretty sure I'd like it.maybe let us know what it is? ?
More Fun love how you take the piss 2 Funny…
– Blown out highlights comes down to knowledge of tools. Knowledge of tools is something that is lacking in the hobbyist community and even to some extent in the pro community.
– Post production can cross over from the realm of photography to graphic art. This is why they typically do poorly in pure photography competitions.
As ever I really enjoyed the Pod Cast I also watch your Vlogs which are also great. Can I suggest that you may consider including a female landscape photographer such as Lynne Luxon Jones to add some balance she is a great landscape photographer with a good personality. Question , I am now 72 and struggle walking any distance how will you guys cope with ageing?
Know when a shot doesn’t work & definitely don’t over process to make it work.
Gary I think Lee Filters do a hood for the filter holder, but as for you 3 axis tripod head I could never remember which knob did what. It’s me age.
I would like to hear more of this Gary & Adam agreeing to disagree banter. Paul just needs some bouncer trading if the fight starts.
As for useless gear, I bought a lens cloth & when it came it was so small I think if was made for cleaning postage stamps. Well done lads keeps it up.
Very enjoyable podcast and great synergy between the three of you.
In my day as a pro photographer doing weddings each week back in the day of 120 vps film and before digital we would rely on experience a light meter and a good tripod. Today I only see photographers shooting with digital how times have changed.
I've got a useless piece of photography gear. The Manfrotto PIXI mini tripod. It wouldn't hold up a wet fart! I have a Panasonic GX80 (Mirrorless…shock, horror!) it weights next to nothing, especially with the pancake kit lens. Yet the useless excuse for a tripod simply can't hold it up. I keep it in my camera bag just to show people how bad it is. I could rant about it all day as it cost me £19 and i hate wasting money. Blood…pressure…rising…must….calm….down.
Great podcast again guys. 👍
