Wow, just read the restrictions for Machu Pichu. You basically can't do anything without a permit, not even have a model with a dress. On the other hand, people streaking in Machu Pichu like it's their right. How would they feel if someone did that on their hometown church's front lawn or cemetery? Total lack of respect.

Enjoy the place and take some moments with your camera. What's the point of taking the perfect Eifel Tower Shot. It has already been taken by a million people.

Biggest screw up. Not knowing German (although being married to one for 21 years, at the time only 4 or 5 though). Our rental car breaks down on one of theses MASSIVE freeways they have there. Bummer. But sitting there waiting for rescue I thought that it might be cool sitting there waiting for our rescuers to make a slow mo video or switching over to jpg’s at very high FPS. Me at the wheel and hub reading the signs and maps and calling. So I had my camera on my knees. All the sudden a hard fist was banging on my side window. I was SOOO happy to finally been found and rescue in this furnish of cars passing in all directions at a speed near the one of light in vacuum. I was SO happily I pushed down the side window and shouted out ”Ah, Gestapo, kan sie (wrong) hilphen Mich? Meine auto kaputt!”Hub took the Camera from me, but continued filmning – and ive seen the sequence several time since that day, and it’s really embarrassing. The police however corrected me on the gestapo part, but was otherwise very kind and sympathetic. AND He spoke English, which made the world to me. Today it’s laughable 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 back in the days, less so.

Hello guys really like your videos. I just got a A73 and I want a lens for my Daughter’s Prom and trip to Japan do you have a single lens recommendation for this? Thanks

only thing you need to learn in a foreign language is how to say "where is the gas station". Reason, food, water, and typically someone there that can speak English. LOL

One bit of advice I can give from experience is forget about a camera backpack. I don’t care what make or model they are designed for the comfort of your gear, not you. My recommendation is if you know your gonna be doing a lot of walking or hiking, get yourself an Osprey pack with a hip belt. Go to REI and get sized correctly and get a real backpack. I’d rather be comfortable taking gear. I use those wraps for my lenses and use a Peak Design Capture Clip attached to my backpack shoulder strap. Get one with hip belt pockets so you can have batteries and stuff like that handy. I use a Sony A6000 with a 18-105 lens that gets me a lot of mileage without switching lenses. I usually carry one wide angle prime and choose one other zoom. That’s it. A 35 liter is a good size pack and will have plenty of room for rain gear, souvenirs and food. I keep my stuff organized in zip lock bags to keep things dry and organized on the cheap. Also get a rain cover for the pack and your gold. I traveled with a camera pack a few times and was sorry. You have to get the weight off your shoulders especially when your photographing a lot. Your welcome.

Great advice! What hard drive do you use to back up your pictures while travelling?

I have a small bag that when fully loaded is the most kit I'll want to take with me anywhere, so I use that to limit myself, and may carry a few extra things in the carry-on but that's it. Also, don't think I'll need a telephoto but want one just in case? Those 55-200mm kit lenses make fantastic, "Just in case," options, especially the newer collapsible ones, and they keep up at 10 FPS on a D500. 🙂

I went to NY, prepared for some cool shots. I even bought some stuff from B&H and I was so ready to roll out in Times Square (I'm a night lights street guy) but THE F'IN WIND MAN. That godamn wind that almost frostbite my fingers and my face.

I still had a great time doing tourist stuff but in regards to photography I just didn't had the physical force and temple to endure the strong wind currents in search for the perfect shots I wanted, and don't make me start with the top Empire State or Liberty Island.

So: If you're visiting NY in the winter and you didn't even knew that wind could be so strong and so cold (it isn't where I live, even in the coldest night of the year), prepare to suffer.

Love the advice to “…give yourself a day off” on the day you land. I definitely need the time to recoup after brutal travel.

Also, really really calculate how much the AIRLINEs will try to force you NOT to take…

My travel Photography began with a disposable camera (BOX) because Mom wanted pictures… and saw how crappy they were… so I took an NYU Photography Class and took the suggested TWO rolls of Chrome to the Dominican Republic for ONE week using a 50mm on a Nikon FM (as in Fully Manual) BEST LEARNING EXPERIENCE EVER!

Ah, I miss the 90s traveling thru the Indonesian Archipelago… Air Mailing FILM back to Baboo Labs every two weeks in X-ray proof bags… cost more than the whole trip

For anyone hopping on nine months after the video posted: After leaving the Roman Forum I put my iPhone in the front pants pocket, took a taxi to the Vatican, had lunch, then realized the phone somehow slid from photo to video, engaged itself, shooting one hour and six minutes of darkness (fortunately)! Battery died a few minutes later. Luckily, I had my Canon as a back-up!

You talk about super large memory cards here is what I do. Right or wrong I format my cards every night, no matter if I am on a week long or month long trip but first I save my files (both JG and RAW) to my laptop and also to my WD external hard drive. I also never put my laptop or external drive in my checked bags. I also try to not keep the external drive and the laptop together.

  23. Fred Level says

My biggest travel photography mistake: forgot to put the SD cards back in before I left 🤪

not planning/packing for the kind of people at the place you're staying at or traveling with. Second big trip to Japan had booked in at backpackers but planned as if staying at hotels and ryokans (small private guest houses) from previous trips there – expensive gear that I felt 200% safe leaving in a Japanese hotel/ryokan when I went out walking with just the basics. But the backpackers were full of … well not Japanese guests and even a private room only relied on honesty (no locks).
Came back one day to find my main camera bag missing with the, what was then, the best canon zooms ,28-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 + pro flash missing. Fortunately it had only walked down to the luggage store room where it was hidden behind backpacks from some… well… lets just say a group of "less reputable" international travelers.
My last trip to Europe I thought I could have taken more gear as I was booked in at private airBnB's for the first half but as travel plans changed and evolved for the second half and staying in shared rooms at hostels in the UK I was so glad all the gear was a single small, light, mirrorless system and tablet that fitted in to shoulderbag that I could easily take with me even when having a photo free day at museums and art galleries
