How to Clean Backgrounds in Photoshop

I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How:

The white background has become a standard in the photography world and for good reasons. You can pick up a white seamless background for less than $100, turning any space into a photo studio.

Backdrop paper is also ideal for cutting people out of their backgrounds or eliminating distractions. Many popular celebrity portraits were photographed in hotel rooms using a roll of white seamless paper.

Because your subjects will be standing on a giant sheet of white paper, chances are the paper is going to get dirty. In today’s episode we show you how to clean a backdrop in Photoshop.

Clean Backdrop using Median Filter

The fastest way to clean a background in Photoshop is by using Photoshop’s Filters. We found that the Median filter works very well and saves a ton of time. Go to Filter – Noise – Median and choose a radius that will make all the dirt vanish. Be sure to do this on a copy of your background layer so you can use a layer mask and just have this effect show up over the background.

If you have any areas that the Median Filter missed, take care of them with the healing brush tool and you are good to go!

I recommend this with sequence separation technique. I keep layers with Median and Colour between High Frequency and Low Frequency. It helps to keep grain and more natural feeling of the image. It's something you will see on high quality print.

Thank you so much for this! Saved me so much time cleaning up a background where I used my studio wall. My white studio wall worked out great but then you could see the drywall texture throughout the image. Wanted to keep the soft shadow my light created and this worked perfectly in cleaning up the image and keeping the shadow!!

Nice! i have been using select / mask Gaussian blur to do this; edges are always a challenge and often Gaussian didn't 'blend' things quite right. This method seems to help alleviate those problems. I admit I didn't even know about Median (Photoshop has so many pieces!) … will try it next time!

  30. Peter Branch says

Hi, I've used this technique but I find that if I light the background so that it goes off white or has a gradient then this creates banding  especially if you add a curve after. Anyone else get that or a way to stop the banding. Tried adding noise but may not be suitable for the image.

I have a photo taken on a phone of my dad that sadly passed away recently. It was the last picture of me and dad but I was in front of a window and a lot of light has blown out a lot of pixels. The photo is low res and and quite bad resolution. Have you done a tuturial that I can view and try and clean up my picture? I would love to be able to clean up and frame it. Can you please help?
