A Nice View Doesn't Make a Great Photograph
I get in my camper van and escape for a couple of days of landscape photography. I climb a nearby fell and photograph the mist as it descends over Derwent Water, however a great view doesn’t always mean a great photograph.

It's alright photos, nothing special, nothing to wow about.
Amazing shots but most importantly- cool van.
I swear you were shooting with Nikon in the last video I watched. Are you ambi-shooterous? 😛
>A Nice View Doesn't Make a Great Photograph
This is paunfully accurate…
I've taken so many pictures if great views that are utterly awful later in lightroom… they come out flat and useless with no subject and I'm like "why did I take a picture of that?"
I am new to landscape photography, well photography in general really. Loved your video on using a long lens and as luck would have it as well as capturing wildlife at our local RSPB site i also started to play with focusing on parts of the landscape as you describe. Watching this has inspired me to do it even more ……………. thanks Thomas ……………. love the simplicity of your vlogs.
How many times did you have to turn around to get the camera filming you walking away?
A great view however usually makes a great photo even with simple composition, but really great views are rare!
Hey Thomas, what is the name of the music in video's background? thanks
Thank you for your hard work, beautiful
I have to practice patience when doing landscape photog. I feel like its the one thing I lack. I'm pretty good at architectural and street photography but landscapes as easy as it appears takes some time. Deep breaths! Thank Tom. Very inspirational.
Another very enjoyable video. But I have a question. The shot of the outcropping that you rushed to capture, I would have pulled the shot back a little to get more of the sun's rays. Then, those rays would have drawn your eye to the outcropping. As you were talking and composing, that's what my eyes did. Any thoughts? Would really like to hear …..
Like your stuff but dude at the start of your video that mossy gate and tree holds amazing promise for a picture.
That’s one of the nicest photos I’ve ever seen
I run into this problem quite a bit. I know that sometimes there just isn't a photo there to take even though you have a nice view but it can bring me down sometimes. Another great video bud!
I'm amazed about how many douche bags and trolls there are in life. There are 120 "thumbs down" on this video. Watching a nicely done video like this made 120 folks jealous enough to give a thumbs down. Keep up the wonderful work Thomas!
I was feeling uninspired, bored and depressed about photography, then I found Thomas Heatons videos and feel all cheery again. His effervescent personality and boundless enthusiasm is just what I needed.
The backpack looks heavy af.
Landscape photography reminds me a lot of hunting wildlife. Lots of trekking and adventure. Lots of patience. Waiting for the perfect place, moment, and shot. Sometimes you see nothing. Sometimes you do.
"It doesn't excite me at all, not enough to take the picture…" (7:35) Of the 237,566 current views, 237,565 of us would trade our first born child to get a picture like that to call our own…! And that 1 other view is Thomas checking the video uploaded properly… This, I guess, is why you drive the fancy transit van and we sit and watch youtube videos! 👏👏👏
you're a tad bit close to the edge, bub
This is my first vid I've seen of yours. Amazing job m8.
The drone video was pretty good
The picture at 3:30 is the first time a landscape filled me with emotions… A rare beauty.
