Here’s an ideal, get a new charger 🔌 that one looks old.
It might be a problem with the lightning cable. I used to have some problems charging my 5s, but after I got a different cable (I don't think Apple made it) it fixed everything.

Another reason to get a LG stylo 4. Cheaper. Stylus. Bug screen if you have a iphone 8. Why buy a bigger screen for 900 when you could get it for 150? They don't explode. I like my LG stylo 4 and I think it's as good as a iphone 8. XD

I don't have a iphone xs max or xs but i have the iphone 5s in ios 12.1.2 i have the same problem when i plug the connector it will not detected when i press the home button it detected but in ios 12.1.4-12.2 it detected even I didn't press the home button.
There is an option in the Face Id and Password screen that says allow access to usb devices while phone is locked. If that is off then it used to not be able to notice the charger. That has changed in software updates.
