The Canon 80D – A Good Travel Video Camera?
My thoughts on using the Canon 80D as a single camera and single lens setup for shooting travel videos.

Great stuff! I know this is an old clip but very inspiring. I’ve only just got the 80D for B-roll to my C100 Mkii. However it will come in handy for fun stuff on an upcoming holiday. I have to say the footage looks amazing. Like you said, I know the LCD will be an issue in sunlight. My main gripe with the 80D is the discovery that the LCD cuts out with an external monitor attached. Given how much control the touch screen affords this is a big downer, not to mention that a bright external monitor could potentially solve the visibility issue. It’s also pretty small for my old peepers which is why I usually attach a 7” monitor to the C100. Still, you can’t have everything. I’ll adapt my approach.
I just bought this camera and mainly for videos, i used your video on best video settings and i am 100% satisfied with this camera
Grant, thanks for this video. I just happened to "stumble" upon your youtube channel and have watched several videos and am now a subscriber! I have a couple of questions if it's okay as I realize this was done about 2 yrs ago.
I use my 80D to shoot pics and video for my son's travel baseball team. The images I get are great, but I'd like to do more with the video besides just putting it on auto. I REALLY want to be able to shoot slow motion when the kids are on the bases about to steal (I think it'd look REAL COOL!) and would look great on our website. My first question is how easy is it to switch from picture to video and slow motion video setting?
Second question is which Gorillapod do you use with it? I have a Mono-pod for shooting games, but would like something smaller/practical for around the house or shooting from a desktop. Oh, do you have a remote for it as well?
Thanks in advance!
Thank you
how u stabilized your video…looks great?I have canon 80d
which setting you are use to record this video? Can you help me?
I didn't exactly use it as a travel camera, but it was awesome when I took it to Japan. However, I only used primes (I shoot mainly photography), so my experience might be different.
Is it possible to shoot videos like this using 18-55mm lens???
Cheers Grant, great vid and fellow 80D owner here. Just with regards to dealing with outside glare on the LCD – I use a velcro box frame device by HOODMAN – the H-400 model that slips over the LCD of the 80D and shades it for bright outside condtions. I originally used it for my Video Cam of some years past and have now re-purposed it to the 80D. Works a treat!
Look into the peak design clamp for your canon 80D or for any camera for that matter. It made accessibility to my camera a lot easier when travelling.
Did you shoot in auto or manual?
May i ask what mic or audio setup you use?
I had this camera for 2 week and it end up breaking. The camera keep turning off and on. I think there's a sensor somewhere by the memory slot that's loose because everytime I grip that part it turn off. I treat the camera like my baby T_T
Very cool mate i think you've just sold me!!
great video. did you use the settings that you explaining your last video how to setup your camera for video
Thanks! Excellent real use video samples and commentary.
Do you still plan on taking 80D with you for future trips or you'll stick to G7X? Weight/size difference is enormous.
When you start taking shots with a circular polarizer, do you have to be committed to use it all the time (for consistency within a video project) or can you put it on and off at will?
great video
Great video friend! Just bought mine today.
If it had a 5 axis image stabilization and 4K it would be the perfect setup. Well if it was m43 even better as its a bit large.
Wow, great exposure on the images, and nice dynamic range on the canon. Thanks
going to Italy in April and I am bringing both the 70D and my new 80D, as I shoot more video as I get older.
Nice footage, were you shooting at 50fps PAL or 60 NTSC ??
Could you tell me what settings you use on the g7x? i tend to not get great results from mine but everyone else who uses one seems to get great quality. do you use it in full auto and if so do you use a neutral picture profile? i find my images often over saturated and jumpy but yours looks great.
Very nice video, wish all my vacation movies were that good.
have you tried shooting in the night? is it good?
hi Mr Johnston, any overheat issue during video shooting ?
I love the Canon 80D film look. My Canon 80D had flicker on my articulate screen after 1 week usage. I returned the camera to exchange for a new one . I wonder if the screen is durable or my camera was a lemon.
Hey Grant
You deserve much more attention for you excellent work on YouTube. I use the canon g7x my self on my Danish channel and you among others convinced me to by this camera.
I have one question for you and that is not about the cameras but it's about the background music you use. Where do you get it? Because I find it hard to find the right music for my videos and I have used YouTube library but I often feel that it doesn't quite fit for my videos. Do you have a good recommendation for finding music?
Thanks for your great videos and have a good day.
Hi from Denmark 🙂

Great video Grant, thanks for taking the time out on your family holiday to share!
Thanks Grant for the tutorial on the Canon 80D & it looks like you had a great holiday with your family & some awesome memories to look back on, in the future. I have been studying film & editing for around three years now & have a real passion for it & learning more all the time. I started with Go Pro black edition, which I still use & upgraded to a small Drift Ghost S action camera about 2 years ago, which both cameras have been great for my fishing videos ect, but I have got to the stage that I would like to use a camera with a zoom to get more closer detail from far away, but still remain compact. I'm very confused as what to get & make the right decision as their are so many to choose from these days & to tell you the truth, it's doing my head in to make the right choose. I have a few cameras in mind = the Canon G7X or G3X that pump out around 20 megapixel's or the Lumix LX100, all quite powerful small cameras, or bite the bullet & pay more for of the Black Magic camera range. Haven't had the experience that you have had but will hope to get their one day eventually as I have that secret word called passion, if you know were im coming from !! I am using Adobe Premier pro Editing system for 3 years now, a bit of a mission for me at the begging but im very comfortable with it now, even though another 2 years on it, I hope to perfect the editing art. So really some professional advice on my next entry cameras would be great. Feel free to brose some of my videos & I notice that you are in Queenstown area which I visit a lot. Cheers !! P.S I here their is a new G7X mark two coming out soon ?
Thanks Grant, looked pretty good for the 80D with the kit lens. It proved to be very clear. You're daughters are lovely, I wish you all the best during your holiday. Enjoy!
Great video and beautiful location!
We were not so far as always, I live in Rome. awesome video as always
How about Image stabilization (On Video Mode) when shooting handheld with 80D, Mr. Grant? I'm now using Canon S120 & G7X for my most video, and happy with their I.S. But I still want a dSLR to get better still images
Great Review I am still weighing up whether to go 70D or 80D ?
Hi Grant, love my 80D, but not sure of the settings for slow motion. I am rather experienced at settings. Is there anyway you could do a tutorial on this feature and the correct settings for it.
SUPER !!
Love the quality on the 80D. Just find the colors and saturation much more appealing then the new Mirrorless. The 120 on the sony needs a lot of post to be appealing.
