In-Camera Settings for RAW Outdoor Photography — Picture Styles & Controls
For a more complete breakdown of Picture Styles and how to master their use in RAW photography, click here to read the full article:
Nature and Landscape photographers who always shoot RAW might never think about changing their in-camera picture style / picture control settings, since all of the options such as in-camera sharpening, contrast, etc. will disappear in RAW post-production with most software such as Adobe Lightroom and Bridge.
In other words, why would you want to “mess up” your camera’s contrast and colors? We’ll go into greater detail in the full article, but simply put: You should make it your goal to test your camera’s different in-camera settings so you can use them to get the best possible exposures in very dynamic settings, (It could save you from having to bracket and perform time-consuming HDR processing!) …as well as simply helping to envision your final result from an artistic standpoint.
To process these seascape images, we used the SLR Lounge Preset System V5.1, which you can read about here:
If you achieved the "look" you are after in camera with Picture Controls, why would you bring the corresponding RAW file into LR and work like mad to get the same look. Just use ViewNX to export a TIFF and its done, or at the minimum you have a great starting point. Now you have the best of both worlds – still have the original RAW, and you saved a boatload of time by not reproducing in LR what you produced directly in camera.

Good video, was wondering what happens when u apply the preset to the JPEG version of the same RAW file, if its OK doesnt it sound ok to shoot JPEG with the color profiles?
best way to go is looking at your histogram before to shoot, look where the data is and go for it
Hi wot hdr pre sets are you using on light room ?
What lends do you use
Hahaha "this is the raw ewwww the raw photo" I was dying. Great video
Where can i get all those presets? Thanks
What is the photo editor you are using in this video?
I do not use Lightroom at present, but do use PSCS6. I find your style setting algorithms very interesting. I tend to shoot nature more, so my experiments will tend to go macro. I would like to check out the shadow detail overall improvement using your methods.Yes! I use Nikon too, the D7000. Thank you!
I'm pretty chuffed with this site.
Well explained!
