How to get Professional Photos with a Kit Lens: "Nikon D5500" 5 Min Portrait

46 35

The Challenge – Use the Nikon D5500 and Kit 18-140 lens for a “Real World Review” and “5 Min Portrait”. The catch, I have never used this camera or lens before. Click Here to see all the FULL RES exported files

Being that I had never used this camera before I had to get in the mindset that I can only use the Nikon D5500 and the 18-140 F3.5 to F5.6 kit lens. There is a misconception that you can only get great results with better glass. There is also a misconception that I can only get good photos with the most expensive gear in the world. I know once you watch this video and see the results that will never be a question or concern again.

This may have been covered, before, but what's that little box on top of the camera?

  6. Nonnasmyladie says

IT IS NOT TRUE that you can only shoot JPEG using the WiFi control. YOU CAN SHOOT RAW with the wifi controls.

I use this option all the time. I bought this camera for this function. It is by far the most overlooked feature of Nikon's "midrange" DSLR cameras. I can use my 10" tablet as a live view screen to control my camera. When I'm shooting night shots or landscapes the option to control my camera while it is on a tripod by using my phone or tablet is just incredible.

If your camera is set to shoot RAW you can still have the camera shoot RAW + JPEG and it sends a little 2mb Jpeg to your phone. You talk about chimping and how it's good to look and see your exposures. It's amazing to be able to see a full-size jpg on a tablet while you are shooting and really see what you're getting done.

That is such an underappreciated feature of Nikon cameras and it's really important that people know that you can shoot RAW that way because that makes it a real option for use as a professional photographer.

    great work Jared 👍🏽

I never understood why everyone says "chimping" is bad. How else are you going to learn?? I mean prior to digital, you had to wait for the developed film to come back or develop it yourself but now you can just look on the dang screen. How is that bad again?? I mean, while you're learning. Obviously during a professional photo shoot you want to "chimp" as little as possible to make for a timely and smooth shoot. You should know your camera and the setting inside and out. You should have gone to the set prior to the shoot and figured out what settings you will need to shoot, ya da ya da ya da, if you're just starting out….again, in my humble opinion.

I think you embarrassed him, just a little bit towards the end…but he definitely shouldn't be embarrassed. He has a great smile and I thought that bit about "cute little dough ball" was adorable. He was obviously reacting to a compliment that you had previously given him.

18:57 By default, a d5500 came with "touch fn" switched on. And you can assign what it does just like you would with the fn physical button.
Again, by default, touch fn is set to toggle the grid on/off in the viewfinder. You can change what it does. Personnally, I set it to control my focus point
If you don't exactly know how to use it, just look it up in the camera's menu. Once you've found it, tap the "?" icon on the touchscreen. Nikon cameras has very detailed instruction on how to use their functions

I enjoy all of your content and I think that you do a great job of explaining what you are doing while you are doing it. One critique for you guys is that there is some dirt or something on your cameraman's lens. I am only commenting on this because you are a photo/video oriented channel.

I watched over 150 your videos over last 7 days. And I got out of auto mode. I found it is not that hard because you taught so well. Now I have a lot more control of what I want to shoot. You really taught me a lot. Thank you so so much. You make photography a really interesting thing to do. The excellent jobs you did with Steven and Tod are really amazing. Really wish you can pass the one million subs asap. You are such a good Youtuber and great, candid person. I am a subscriber from Taiwan. Thank you so much again!!!

  39. Enrique Cubarrubia says

Got it, you have NEVER SHOOT D5500 before. Neither have I when friend asked me to use his D5500 to take shots of his wife and him marching to the altar for the offertory. The lens on his D5500 is the 18-55mm kit lens. Naturally, it did not have the reach for me to get close-up and detailed shots. I switch lens with my 18-140mm lens, the same one you used in your video. Flash was not allowed!. Having D5300, I quickly change the ISO to 400 as my base and activated the Auto-select ISO and minimum shutter speed to 1/50. Set the camera exposure to Aperture Priority at f/5.6. Set one button as Back-focus. Got about dozen and half excellent keeper shots.

Had flash been allowed, I would probably use Flash-Bracket, set continuous at 3 fps. My Nissin MG8000 could keep up as it has on several occasions. I'd rather use my D800 24~85mm f/2.8 at ISO 4000 on that event.

Bottom line, Auto-ISO in conjunction with minimum aperture is another trick to get descent exposure.

This pizza joint was rated best in the US by Bon Appetit magazine a few years ago by the way. Never been but on the list (fellow Philly guy and Nikon shooter… Shoot the D5300, which I totally dig.) Waiting on my Nikon-ready, machined to shoot at infinity, with Dandelion Nikon CPU attached "swirly Bokeh king" Helios 44 58mm f2 (FSU Zeiss Biotar clone) to come in the mail. My Xmas gift to me. Great vid btw.
