Home Studio Essentials Part 10: Take and Make Great Photos with Gavin Hoey: Adorama Photography TV
Shooting against a dark background can cause problems, especially if your subject is wearing dark cloths. Fortunately, Gavin Hoey has a couple of tricks and tips to avoid his model blending into the background. In this video you’ll see how using a second flash to light the background, or as a hair light, can really lift the subject away from the background.
Only have one light? Well Gavin has that covered too and he also has some great Photoshop tips to pass share with you.

I love your background. I have watched lots of your videos but have never found out where you got it from. Do you have a link for it?

Great stuff. Very good information explained nicely!
Hi,
Gavin Hoey I love how you gave explanation every single detail in your videos.
I'm a beginner of light set-up. Would you please give every tiny detail of light set-up, how you use a wireless trigger & how you control light from you tigger remote??
What would happen if you don't match the camera and flash with the same F stop?
great stuff
Shes really pretty..
The best videos as always. Thank you Adorama and Gavin Hoey
thank you Gavin for your explanations. Even if I'm not English native speaking, you're very clear and effective in your videos !
Consistently informative and concise. Gavin's a great presenter. And thanks Adorama for all the great content with no hard sales pitch. Kudos.
Gavin, where can I get the backdrop you use in this tutorial? I like the texture.
what a great demo, thanks Gavin!!
Where can I find this background ? or did you made it ?
Your video is very helpful. Thank you so much. I want to make the background of texture like the one you made. Pls guide me to do this.
i watched this video and i really love your chanel already.:)
what kind of background is that? I love the texture.
I Really want to know how can I make that backround! Enybodu knows? Thanks!!
Hi Gavin. At the end of the video you said you wanted to get rid of the "marching ants." But you didn't say how you did that. I'm new to Photoshop. What did you do to get rid of that selection? Thanks.
it's very cool and your teaching mind blowing, good sir, good luck…
Can you share some advice on the legalities of running a home photo studio? I mean permits, code compliance, city ordinances etc?
Just finished watching 1-10 of these home studio videos. Thank you for putting these together. It has helped me open up my mind to new possibilities. Also, it helps me remember how much you can do with just 1-2 lights.
Thanks!
model wast lying
what boom arm are you using?
Another fantastic video and learning my photoshop more and more watching them. I think this may be a question more for Adorama than Gavin, but are there any videos about working with models? I tend to do more wildlife and macro shots where I don't know have to pose people. I'm rather nervous about working with professional models were they most likely know more than I do. I once saw a video on YouTube and the photographer came across very rude, something Gavin and Mark never are.
and we gonna do that .. right now 😀
how big is gavin home studio ? can i have the exact measurement of the space sir?
Can't we change the power from camera if we are using strobe instead of streak light?
Thanks, Joe Were for your explanation
You point your light meter at the light and not to camera can you explain the reason?
Great video's all.
Another awesome video 🙂 thanks for making these!
+Adorama Hi. Nice video! How do you trigger the flash with the lightmeter? Thank you!
I most say, following a lot presenters on youtube, but Gavin is properly the best for me to tell how to..
Enjoying these shows and bookmarked them for later 🙂
Great video Gavin… Watched it several times and have just a quick question… The streak light is very interesting and have already reviewed at Adorama and probably will incorporate it into my very small home studio… but what type / brand / model of light source were you using for the 2336 Apollo orb?
best ever! 🙂
Your work and Tuts have improved so much over the years. A lot of hard work.Well done
