The UGLY side of Landscape Photography
Lots of photographers may have you believe that landscape photography is all about being at one with nature, witnessing beautiful sunsets and connecting with the landscape on another level. Well, sadly this is rarely the case.

coo coo
The difference between you and me is; you have 99 good days and one bad one. I on the other hand have 99 bad ones and one good one, lol.
Jusst love the music
I’m rather lazy and I just drone it instead of climbing mountains 🤣
Love the video, as others say it’s reassuring to see that others suffer as well with the same challenges and issues. It helps make your videos feel real and something I can relate to more than other photographers. I also love the music you use, really matches the meaning/scenes.
come to Thailand! for take a good landscape photos 🙂
Great video, really enjoyed it. Loved the images produced in particular the wide shot. Keep up the great content.
You can also get a few more shots out of a 'dead' battery by licking (NOT KIDDING) the contacts points.
Hi Thomas, I arrived here at the recommendation of a friend, enjoyed this video, and will be hanging around – have subscribed 🙂
Great video as usual :-). Have you found your new camera system yet?
Been there and done that
'Murphy' was a photographer.
your dedication to your art is AMAZING, and your images speak for it. so much depth. one shot tells so many stories.
Had set up the 8 X 10", leaded with a sheet of color transparency film, then it was waiting till the rain abided. The light breached the clouds and struck the raindrops, the shutter deftly sounded <schilck> , what a wonderful day.
Sorry Thomas, but that is the reality of live. "God's Kingdom suffers violence and the violent take it by force." Don't give up bro.!
To me, those moments, shown in your video, are clearly not the ugly side of landscape photography. That's actually my favorites moments, no matter the weather. Ok, back in the days, rain was always winning, at some point. So does the cold. But now, cameras are water resistants, and there are many cheap options for the photographer to stay dry and warm. Anyway, great video, really like the violin music.
Scares the crap out of me to see you driving on the wrong side of the road. Be safe out there. Love your commentaries and enthusiasm for photography.
Fellow photog here … I noticed you walked past the fallen tree at 0:38 … to me … in that wet light natural colorful setting … would have been great to find amazing compositions and closer details on that tree (and possibly with the trees behind it as a backdrop) … such amazing drama can be discovered from scenes like that. Closeups, twisted shapes, warm colors from wet wood, etc … I would have spent 30 min right there … and no need for a cloud break. 🙂
I like your channel 🙂
Bring the beer with you 😆
I really enjoyed this Video. Its the reality of what we go through. People just see the images but don't understand the effort behind them. Man! I've had some bad days. Forgot all of my memory cards one day. Thought i'd slipped them in the bag but left them on my desk. Another time forgot to charge my second battery. Forgot filters. Forgot to pack a specific lens! I have even had bad days when it all seemed good. Just by being disappointed with the images. Some i was excited about just didn't quite look like i though they would. I swear in the dark near beach head. Waiting for the sunrise. A storm came out of nowhere and the winds were so bad for about 20 minutes, i thought i was going to get blown off the cliff!
Someone else certainly likes Tom's composition at 11:08 of this video. Check out 17:08 of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDA8kHPgWhk.
I just came across this video. Wow! This is one of the best videos I have seen on youtube. Thanks for putting this together and posting it.
Whenever i feel bad or i had just a bad day in photography i always watch your videos to give me motivation…keep up at good work it means a lot to me.
A fridge full of beer? Are you insane to be out there waiting for an amazing photograph that you can look at with pride for 50 years? I question what you are doing. I'd be at the pub. But yeah, my photos are somewhat lacking, most of the time.
4:49 me after finishing my favourite web series
True, this has happened to me a few times
It’s just goes to show that landscape photography isn’t all “ beer & skittles”! It’s a tough gig and only hard work, perseverance and patience will get the results we all crave! Good vlog which will keep our feet firmly on the ground!
Great video Brother, damn shame @ 11min- 5secs the wooden frames blocking the winding distant water ways curve.. fine scene.
Be well.
I did a photo shoot 20 or so years ago, portraits at a school event. Kids and parents were already lining up before I arrived, so I hurried my setup to get things moving. Things seemed to go fine, but when my exposure count reached 26 (you could usually get 25 frames from a roll of 24), I realized that I had forgotten to load film. I had to track down 25 families and re-shoot from the beginning, and some of them had already gone.
Checked the camera, charged the batteries, cleared the memory cards, packed the bag the night before. Next morning, got everything ready and took off only to realize an hour down the road that the camera and bag were still sitting on the dining room table. Like they say, the best camera is the one you have with you. Day turned into a great Smartphone camera experience.
What's the longest you've ever waited for a great shot?
LOL. Cheered me up to see this.
Love this video because it’s really honest.
i unfortunately forgot my memory card in another state so went and bought a new one for the next morning. head
meet wall….repeatedly.
People say “good picture” as they say “good weather today” but they don’t even imagine the backstage of a good photo. Sometimes this is frustrating…
Great to watch your video and see that even the experts can make mistakes, but you managed to get a couple of good shots keep up the good work.
U look like Domhnall Gleeson from Star Wars
Can you recommend a good lightweight tripod for landscape photography. What do you use?
Great video 👍👍
He's human! I thought only I did stupid things. 391 thumbs down, REALLY. What, did your dog bite you today?
One of my favourite videos you've done. You're realism shakes the boundary of the typical, always posetive YouTuber. Not to say being happy and posetive isn't great, I just enjoy how you always persevere no matter the circumstances. I always appreciate when creators like yourself show what it really takes to do what you do, and it's not always glamorous. Thanks for all you do, Thomas. Always looking forward to what's next.
Thomas I'm brand new to photograph y but why is yout exposures for these landscapes so long compared to just a photo? Thank you
Your videos are incredibly fantastic, you really inspire me with your videos. you explain everything well, show a bit of the environment, but also of your settings. I have only been photographing Nikon D7100 for 3 years and I find landscape photography and fine art very cool. For the most beautiful landscapes you just have to travel a lot. I myself come from the Netherlands but I follow you closely on youtube, twitter and instagram and I just get a wonderful feeling to look at your photos and to your videos you're fantastic. I just watched your video from the 12 months and I find August 1 of the most beautiful Seascape. Go on through Thomas. I will go to the photography school in September for a 2.5 year program and I will certainly do what you want with your advice and information. The only thing I want to have is a fullframe and filters hahahaha, and hopefully I will be just as good as you. You are already a Fan of me
Thomas Heaton, what do u think of this ? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155123854622782&set=a.10150768951862782.499252.619102781&type=3&theater
Excellent video! So glad to see the pros struggle too.
Thomas I was wondering if you could recommend a few photography books ??
I feel for you. I waitied for 15 hours over 3 days on a spot without breaking out the camera to take a shot I was hoping for all summer. Next year I will get it I hope. But the wait gave me a good nap, and I had somer otters fighting right next to me. Keep up the good work you are a great inspiration. Look st instagram to se my work : Arkticzug
