Shooting Landscapes in Portrait Mode with the DJI Mavic Pro

29 59

I’ve been shooting aerial drone landscapes for a few years now and talk a lot about shooting multi-layer panoramics in my book and when I do workshops. There’s a mode on the DJI Mavic Pro that a lot of people don’t talk about much and that is Portrait Capture. When portrait capture is turned on, the Mavic camera rotates 90 degrees. This enables you to go from landscape mode to portrait mode, giving you a taller photo. I utilize this mode a lot when shooting panoramic photos so I can capture a lot more sky and foreground in my compositions.

If you could please create a tutorial on how to take photos for a pano and how to edit it after that would be much appreciated thanks!

This is the one I've been looking for. Have you experimented with AEB for each shot in the stitch? Would need some processing power for that though I guess. Nice tute!

One of the best features, for me, of the mavic pro over other dji drones, and one feature that won't be in the next mavic generation…

Great video, but did you do a video showing how to shot the pano in portrait mode? I'm guessing you rotate the drone, but how much overlap do you use: half? a third? a quarter? Do you take photos left to right or center to right then left to center? If you've done a field video showing how you take portrait mode panos, please provide the link. Thanks! And keep up the great work!

I am learning loads from your videos, thank you for your help, did you move the drone manually from frame to frame or there is an app to help you on that?

FlytPath, is portrait mode only for stills? How to also shoot video in this mode? When I tried, the playback showed the images horizontally. Thank you.

Not yet tried this mode for panoramic images, definitely will do all the time now. You like me like more sky and foreground stuff..

Just stumbled on two of your videos today. Been looking all over for this info about portrait mode. Quality stuff. Thanks for taking the time to create and share. Also, a video on how to edit photos in Lightroom would be interesting. Subbed.

I'm glad you posted this video. I tried Portrait mode, but couldn't see the camera physically move. So I thought it was just cropping the landscape view. Your close-up showed the camera actually rotates. I wish DJI would provide better tech info. Thanks!

  24. Should I use my nd filters for landscapes in portrait mode?

  25. Samsuki Reviews says

I'm not sure if you mentioned it but make sure that you disable auto mode for white balance (and all the other settings to something fixed like the shutter speed and iso levels) to keep the sky looking consistent. In other words, use MANUAL settings instead of AUTO. Longtime panorama shooter here 🙂

Just got Mavic and would like to try your tips on portrait panoramic – how do you operate the drone so that you get a over lap of images to allow post production to provide a good image 😊

  27. Chris Robbins says

How are you getting permission to fly so close to the airport?

  28. Jamie wipiiti says

Thanks for the video. I've been on the edge of getting this drone, I've been busy enriching my craft with my camera and did not want to take away from that but I keep seeing some really cool perspectives done by using drones for photography and its really peaked my interest. I also live in San Diego, so don't get surprised if I ever tap you on the shoulder to introduce my self. Don't worry I won't do it while you are busy flying.
