Using LR from having no knowledge is actually like learning spanish flamenco by ear with a stringless guitar you never knew how to play while having to string and tune it correctly by yourself. You'll get about 10 months in before you realize that's not someone with a bongo chiming in once in a while but a palm slap on the guitar.

I am lucky because I was raised by my mom who was a professional (Not big by any means) photographer and she always used auto on her Nikon D40. One day I bought myself an LGV20, which has very good pro settings to practice with, like shutter speed, Kelvin based white balance, manual focus, and ISO. This helped me learn most of the basics before I even bought my camera (Nikon D3500) I can honestly say that there was not a single thing on this list that I didn't know, because I have already spent so much time learning how to use white balance, exposure, RAW (Which the LGV20 can in fact shoot), and various powerful photo editing apps like Lightroom mobile and google snapseed. The number one thing that I would always do was underexpose my pictures because they looked way better when I brought them back and they had more of a dark, gloomy look that I loved. When I say underexpose, I mean like between 3 to 7 entire stops, yet my V20 could still bring them back with a narrow, but stylistic color range.

Thank you so much for the tips and insight. I'm so glad you brought up being aware of the background. I will definitely start using AV! YES… different perspectives ROCK! If I'm unable to get a different perspective, I try to play with the photo in post (colors, etc) to give it a different feel. People have chuckled at me when they see me bending down with my Samsung phone to snap a photo, but it would be from the ground up. I would either blur the background to get sort of a macro shot of a tiny detail of the environment or I would blur the foreground and capture the scene from a bugs eye view! I'd explain what I'm doing, of course. I prefer shots that aren't posed (unless it's a close selfie/groupie) where everyone is standing side by side. I need dimension so that the eyes can move around the photo. A group of kids got together for a photo for me. They began to move the roadie case out of the way and chucked the backpack out of frame. I immediately brought it back in and threw it randomly on the side and had one of them sit on the case. I then had each person standing, squatting or sitting randomly (but as natural as possible). They LOVED it. You've enlightened me with several of these suggestions so THANK YOU! I'll definitely purchase a preset and try it out! Yep, most folks don't like to because of what you mentioned, but I'm with you… we can learn from them! You rock. SUBSCRIBED!

Enjoyed the video until you said we’re better off buying presets. Especially as a beginner, I think you’re better off playing with LR and learning the ins and outs before you get into presets. Just my .02
