Product Photography Home Studio Killer Tips

In this video, I take you guys thru the entire process of a home studio product photography shoot. I share with you every detail of my setup, every photo I take and how I made it. I give you my camera settings and flash settings. I also show you my mistakes and how I corrected them.

Product photography requires patience. This is not a quick process and there’s a bit of set up involved. There’s also the mentality. Taking your time to get your exposure just right is critical to getting the right shots.

In this video, I demonstrate the amazing Cactus RF60 speedlites and V6 transceivers using a 4-speedlite setup. The flexibility and power you have with this kind of setup is amazing. Being able to control power to each of your speedlites from the top of the camera is so important, especially when you’re working alone with a lot of lights.

These Cactus flashes and transceiver – receivers, have built-in radio transmitters so they can all send and receive signal. You can set up to 4 groups of flashes in multiple channels, all of which you control a the touch of a button or turn of a dial.

Another amazing thing about the Cactus V6’s is that they come pre-loaded with Canon and Nikon profiles for many of their popular flashes. In this video, I’m using Nikon SB-800 flashes on Cactus V6’s as receivers and able to control the power with the V6 on my camera. AMAZING. And control flash power to the Cactus RF60’s as well.

This video is chock full of killer tips and nuggets. I pop a lot of tips on the screen to help along with the learning process.

wow … a buffet of speedlights.

  2. Michaela Cannon says

Why can't you just put a constant light behind the white background? I don't have that many speedlites.

Shouldn't be this complicated for heaven's sake! Ever heard of the expression "making a meal of it?!" .. some people have all the time and resources in the world to muck around!

It is fun to watch tutorials where people dabble with lighting and see all the mistakes they make.
My suggestion for basic lighting would be to:
    1) Set the position, direction and strength of the main light/lights to get good lighting on whatever you are photographing. Whether to use umbrellas, softboxes, light tent or something else is a matter of taste.
    2) Then turn on the background lights to make the background white without overexposing it too much, as this washes out the dark tones in the subject.

Hello, I am interested in purchasing the backsplash and two of the cactus flashes to make a blownout backdrop for product photography. I am looking on the cactus website and cannot seem to understand what to get. I currently have two Elinchrom d-lite RX4 strobes with softboxes. Would it be possible for me to do this setup by removing the softboxes and using umbrellas for the front lights?

Great video! What are your thoughts on using a 100mm macro lens? I shoot jewelry and most clients/budgets don't call for focus stacking. Is there a more efficient lens to use with my 5D? thanks!

There is WAY TO MUCH needless talk in this video. When you are using radio triggers, it doesn't matter what flash your using.

  27. Up Favors says

Exactly what I was looking for. I'm using a Sony Nex 5R + Sigma 50MM 22.8 … would this work too? I saw the Cactus set 4 flashes.. $720… is there any cheaper alternatives? I saw someone mentioning Yongnuo YN500EX but I am not sure how and IF this will work with Sony Nex 5R. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

  28. Mark Harris says
