Best Camera For Travel Photography & Traveling
I’m going to go through some of the Best Cameras For Travelling so you can decide which one you will be best for you.
So today’s question asks “Hey Chris, I’m about to go backpacking for 2 months and am looking for a good camera to travel with”. Well that’s awesome that you’re going to go backpacking, I did that around South East Asia for a few years and really enjoyed it. Now in terms of travel cameras there are heaps of different cameras that might work for you.
My absolute favourite camera for travelling is this camera here, the Panasonic GM1. I’ve owned this one for about 3 years and it’s an absolute gem. The GM1 is the wold’s smallest interchangeable lens camera and takes stunning photos. I’d highly recommend pairing it up with this lens here, the 20mm 1.7 from Panasonic as well because you can get some brilliant bokeh with it as well. But really the best thing about this camera is it’s size. It easily will fit into a jacket pocket or a larger pair of shorts. I’ve taken mine around the world and I still use this a lot. By the way let me know in the comments section below, which camera do you think is the best camera for travelling and why? and I’ll take a look at your comment.
Next up if you’re looking to take a DSLR with your, I’d try and travel light. That might mean you’ll need a smaller body like the Canon T6 or even the Nikon D3400. These are some of the smallest DSLR’s that you can buy. If you pair that up with a small prime lens like a 50mm 1.8 or a 30mm f2, you’ll be more likely to take your camera around with you more.
You could even go smaller and get the Canon SL1, which is a tiny DSLR from Canon. Of course as a backpacker I’d also recommend a small action camera.
My favoriite at the moment is the GoPro Hero 5. It’s a fantastic little camera and this version has a few little features like voice control and linear mode which really make it a perfect travel camera. You also don’t need a protective case on this one anymore either so it’ll mean you’ll have less to carry around with you as well which is always good when your’e travelling.
So they some of the I’d recommend for travelling.
Hi Chris,
as a sailor I travel a lot and as an amateur photographer I always carry a camera with me. To minimalise on gear I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ 7 and later a DMC-FZ200. These bridgecams with a large zoom range are my perfect travel camera's because they cover all f ranges. But they are almost never mentioned, camera's with changeble lenses are more preffered. But that means a lot of gear, why is this?
the Pentax Q is smaller
So refreshing not to hear an American accent on YouTube for a change
Awesome video! Thanks!
Do they still make the Panasonic GM1?
I would go for the m50 and a 50mm f 1.8 /18 -135mm f 3.5-5.6
Love your videos 😘…
Really informative
Awesome!
Nice
Its too good
Wow good recommendation 👌👍
Hey Chris I'm saving up for a Canon D800 is it worth the money or should I get something else. Love watching your videos Good Luck!!!!!😁
Hey Chris, I’m a MFT user and am looking for a micro-sized pocket rocket per say! I love the size and ability of the gm1, but do you feel it’s still a top competitor in today’s market? Thanks!
nahh mirrorless every time
Ok Chris my best travel camera is a Leica Deluxe 6 with side grip and the EV3 viewfinder it is superb,my system body ex pro 1 with small adaptors for Leica and Nikon lenses. Cheers.
pentax q
Would you post some sample pictures taken with each camera?
The GM1 is so small it has legs?, ie my GM1 was stolen from my camera bag so be careful. Can't get one now, hard to get.
Are there any decent cameras under 200$
Fujifilm XT20
Canon t3i or t6?
I'm heading on a mountain biking trip in Iceland and I'm wondering what camera you would suggest to supplement my SLR (T5i) that would be small enough to place in my pack, but take great shots. I tried a small point and shoot camera, but the speed of the camera wasn't good enough to take any kind of action shots.
20mm f1.7 – cool little lens!
Chris, thank you for the review!…one comment on your link (top 10 best)…you describe as "Best Budget Cameras For Travel 2018", sorry but I dont think $700-$900 cameras really fit in this category…there has got to be a descent all round camera for travel… that means one I can afford to lose, have stolen or break and not have a heart attack…and a camera that doesn't cost more that my ticket! Keep up your fine reviews 🙂
Sony RX100 vest pocket size and decent sensor.
For me anything that's not flat is not a backpackers camera.
For rugged use Samsung TG5 .
Shoots raw, 4k, crush proof and waterproof .
Also live GPS to record where you journeys take you.
May not the greatest sensor at 12mb but guaranteed to last the course and images can be post proceed to up the quality.

I’m so bummed the GM1/5 is not available anymore 😩 What would you recommed as an alternative with similar size and the 20mm/f1.7 lens?
Canon SL2 vs Sony A6000 ?? Which is better ?
what about the canon EOS M6?
the canon t6 is the best of all
Go pro and s8 plus is enough
