Landscape Photography Composition | ‘S’ Curve
A beautiful sunrise photo shoot at the coast. I find an amazing ‘S’ curve and discuss the benefits of returning to the same photography locations again and again.

love your video's
Absolutely Stunning 👌
i enjoy your videos.
Really Loving your video series !!… Lots of How to, AND Gettin' Er Done!.. Keep up the good work.
I have to remind my self to slow down and enjoy the moment when doing photography..Especially when I get to a new site. Thanks for the reminder Thomas.Keep it up.
I'm curious why you used an ND filer with f8 and 3.2" exposure. Can't you just decrease the aperture to f12 or something smaller and get the same result?
You just have to love an S curve. They make any photograph a better one.
I love your videos, Thomas. When you are taking landscape like these shots at f/8 and f/10, where do you focus? Hyperfocal diistance?
Amazing as always. So much to learn.thank you so much
That first image was indeed stunning. I will be looking out for S curves too and probably not just on the beach. Great advice to go back to locations at different times. I am not the best at finding something new at regular locations but you inspire me to rise above this.
Congrats – again – Thomas, and thank you for the trick with the CDs… 🙂
Tom been watching your channel for ages but never got involved (I’m shy like that 😉 ), another set of excellent images by the way. I just want to ask your opinion. Early on in my photography adventure I used to buy a lot of the magazines and one of the big no’s was having lead in lines going out of the photo on the side as it allegedly takes the viewers eye out of the image. What are your thoughts on this as you’ve have done this with your S curve photo. Keep up the good work 🙂
love the 2nd image – good video.
Try tying fishing line through the hole in the CD with a loop to go around the tripod leg so you don't lose it. 😎
Great video Thomas must admit I have not looked to much at sand for images, must have a look next time I go to the beach.👍👍
We just had new september snow about 2ft up on mt. hood I found a road that was plowed leading up to the hiking trails towards the summit of mt. hood it was stunning with a 1hr 6min exposure of the stars trailing above. Great video once again Thomas. Composition makes captivating images out of dull days!
YOOO TOM I live in NAMIBIA and you inspired me to become a landscape photographer (still a beginner) is a meet up possible? Also great work and great vid!
Amazing amazing video. I adore your work. Two points:
1) Please make some videos of post processing
2) what was the song in the end?? 😛
Thank you so much Tom that was amazing video! I loved everything about it the music, the scenery, the technique and how you explained everything is just amazing …I’m blown away and I subscribed! I don’t know how I missed your channel before but I’m really very happy that I found it thank you so much again I’m looking forward to more awesome videos like this
Thomas, I think you managed to better your original picture; fabulous!
Hi Tom – how do you make the decision to go f8 or f10 or f11 – are these variations mainly related to exposure length?
Excellent videos Thomas, glad I found you channel and love your style of presentation. Some may benefit from pointing out where your focus point is when you choose anything other than infinity.
Looking forward to the next one. Keep up the great channel. Regards Roger
Great Video Thomas (as always!) have you been out with the 4×5 much of late, really enjoying your journey into film, something I too am working on however not for landscape! Keep up the great work!
Thomas,
Got your 2018 calendar the other day. I already hung it up in anticipation of January. Stellar work, truly "stunning." 🙂
I have noticed when you say "abstract" usually you mean black and white. I could be off though.
I like the fact that every video you post (that's I've seen) finds the positive. It's always worthwhile going out. But have you ever gone and, at the end of the excursion, would look into the camera and say, "That was a total waste of time." I recently went to a lookout on the east back of the Mississippi looking toward St Louis and the Arch to catch the Balloons of the Great Forest Park Balloon Race as they sailed majestically over the city along the eastward prevailing winds. Unfortunately, that day, the wind was blowing northwest. I suck it out, just in case those tiny dots changed their minds. They did not. So, I decided to capture this manmade geyser at the site with St Louis in the background. I hiked around to the back side and halfway up a railroad trestle when my wife texted me a picture at the front gate saying the pumps were under maintenance and may not work. Indeed, the water barely cleared the trees. A total was of time, aside from reinforcing a lesson I've learned before to plan better.
Really love your videos!! I was wondering if you had any advice or would do a video in the future about the type of paper/finishes to use for landscape photos. Thank You
Great video as always buddy 🙂
Nice video and suggestion for revisiting the place again as to get even better images. I always watch your videos to learn as I love to shoot landscapes. Hope to see some waterfall images and techniques in future. Thank you.
Great images..as usual and a good tip on using CDs to spread the load!!
Your videos and photos always bring me tears.
Epic video mate! Awesome
You never cease to inspire me.
Thomas, thanks for explaining the CD's, but which CD' are best, I would think maybe ones by The Beach Boys or maybe Katrina and the Waves, or doesn't it really matter?
I was wondering if anyone would be able to give he some advice. I'm into landscape and a bit of wildlife. I have a nikon d5100 and looking to upgrade to a 24mp camera such as the d7100 or 7200 or go full frame and spend a bit more and get the d600 or 610. Or another totally different option would be to keep the d5100 and get some more sharp lens. Any ideas??? Also love your channel Tom!!
