Photography is a special art form which requires both talent and training. Not to deter you off your course, obviously, but any photographer worth his or her salt must be more than willing to practice a few new tactics to use out there when snapping photos.
Choose carefully what will show in your photograph. A great picture will allow the viewer to see a particular aspect of the subject in the photograph. Do not try showing too much. Try taking a series of photos for a better impression of a subject than one without details and focus.
Keep the process you use for taking pictures as simple as you can. Often, you can create a magnificent photo without having to play with different color settings and motion settings.
Try to enhance the sense of depth in your landscape photos. Establish a sense of scale by placing an object within the foreground of your picture. A small aperture–no more than f/8 on a digital camera and no more than f/16 on a SLR–can show sharpness in both the background and foreground.
Take shots of people you see in your day. Get permission first. As you travel, you’ll often find that ordinary people or scenes will be the ones that stand out later as you reflect on the journey through your photographs. Seek out spontaneous actions and everyday attire.
Hold your breath while taking pictures to get the perfect shot, all while remaining still. A slight movement is capable of completely ruining a shot. Before you take that amazing picture, take care that you are neither breathing nor moving.
Typically, our mind like to see things ordered in a very even and centered way. Most people are attracted to symmetry, even in pictures. That said, sometimes going against the grain with an off-center photo is an easy way to add interest. Turn off the auto-focus so that your camera doesn’t lock its focus onto the center of your shot. Focus manually instead, and lock the focus just prior to snapping the picture.
Play around with alternate approaches to expressions, perspectives and scale. An otherwise ordinary subject can appear quite artful if placed in an environment where it appears drastically disproportionate in size or humorously out of place. Experiment with your compositions to bring a unique perspective to an ordinary object.
One way to foster creativity in your photography is to impose limitations on yourself. Choose a single concept to photograph, like “beauty” or “what is nature?” Try to shoot 100 different photographs from the same point or within the same room. You can use these limitations to make you think outside the usual parameters.
Have you ever wanted to photograph subjects that were wet or left in the rain? You can make this effect yourself by taking a spray bottle and “misting” some rain on your subject prior to photographing.
Experiment with the focus on your camera to create interesting pictures. Choosing a lower f-stop number will sharpen the focus on your central subject, and blur the rest. This is a good photograph style to use for portrait images, as the subject is usually close to the lens. Increasing the f-stop will make everything in the photograph in focus, foreground and background. Larger f-stop numbers are ideal for landscape photography.
If you still use an old-style film camera, pay attention to the brand of film you select for your photos. Each photographer has individual preferences when it comes to choosing a brand with which to shoot. There is actually no big advantage of one film brand over another. It comes down to what you enjoy using.
Try keeping something interesting in the foreground of your landscape photos to add more appeal to the images. Even something seemingly routine, such as rock formations or tree leaves, can add interesting elements to your images. Your audience will have the impression of looking at the actual landscape, rather than a flat representation of it.
